Kaizer Chiefs 2 (21. Musona 15’, 6. Letsholonyane 88’) SuperSport United 0
Goals by Knowledge Musona in the 15th minute of the game and another by Reneilwe Letsholonyane in the 88th minute sealed a 2-0 win for Kaizer Chiefs against SuperSport United in an Absa Premiership game at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Wednesday evening.
The win saw Chiefs break a run of five consecutive draws as they recorded their first home league win over SuperSport United in twelve years, Musona’s opening goal was also the first scored by Chiefs in over seven years in a home league encounter against Matsasantsa.
After a cagy start to the game Chiefs tactic of going wide paid off in the 15th minute, Mandla Masango moved in from the right rolled the ball off to Letsholonyane whose gentle lay off to the left found Siphiwe Tshabalala on the move.
After moving wide with the ball Shabba laid it forward to Musona who pushed past the pedestrian Thabo September into the United 18 yard area, from the left struck the ball low and wide of Rowen Fernandez who came off his line but could not stop the Amakhosi striker netting his 12th league goal of the season to go joint to scorer in the league.
SuperSport opted to start the game with four attackers which meant that they would always be dangerous when on the offensive, in the 18th minute it took a wonderful piece of goalkeeping from Itumeleng Khune to push Fikru’s Lemasse’s header off a cross from Anthony Laffor from the right over his post.
Three minutes later the Chiefs keeper was diving at full stretch to his left stopping a header this time from Glenn Salmon, on 27 minutes Tshabalala had Fernandez sprawling across his goal to push out his free kick from around 25 yards from goal to safety.
Sthembiso Ngcobo was put clear in on goal by Musona after the Zimbabwean had weaved his way past Morgan Gould and September but Ngcobo blazed his effort from close range over Fernandez goal.
Another cross by laffor from the right seven minutes before half time saw Khune come off his line to get the ball, instead Fikru won the duel with the Chiefs keeper and laid the ball into the path of Tebogo Langerman whose goal bound strike was blocked by Jimmy Tau.
Five minutes before halftime Laffor dragged his effort at goal from the edge of the Chiefs 18 yard area wide, after he had picked up a wayward pass from Chiefs defender Valery Nahayo.
Like the first half it was again a slow start by both teams to the second forty five minutes of play, SuperSport manage to conjure up the first chances of the half the first of which came in the 69th minute. Punch Masenamela though sent his effort from around 18 yards way over Fernandez goal.
A minute later September from the right curled the ball dangerously towards goal where Mogogi Gabonamong was able to gap in between Nahayo and Thomas Sweswe and met the ball powerfully but his header went over just wide of Khune’s goal.
In a copy cat move four minutes later September again was the supplier this time Gabonamong’s header went over Khune’s post, from the restart Chiefs launched an attack of their own and Tinashe Nengomasha went close to scoring a second at the other end.
Jimmy Tau spurned another chance to put Chiefs further in front when he too was guilty of missing the target as he sent the ball wide of goal in the 76th minute, with only Fernandez ahead of him.
Seven minutes from time Khune made a timely save of a diving header from Gabonamong off a Kermit Erasmus.cross from the left, in the eighty eight minute Abia Nale did well to keep the ball in play on the left.
He stormed down the wing before cutting in and laid the ball into the path of Lethsolonyane who struck the ball from way out it skidded along the ground before beating the tame dive of Fernandez as he scored his second goal in consecutive league games to seal the game for Chiefs.
The win keep Chiefs in the title race and puts them now within three points of league leaders Orlando Pirates, victory also sees Chiefs record their first win at home in a league game against SuperSport United in twelve years.
