Kaizer Chiefs were defeated 2-1 in their Telkom Knockout semifinal clash against Maritzburg United at Mbombela Stadium on Sunday. Judas Moseamedi scored a goal in each half for the visitors to send Maritzburg through to the final. Yagan Sasman scored his first goal for Chiefs when drawing the game level at 1-1, Maritzburg scored their second six minutes from the end to progress to the final
Bruce Bvuma was alert to turn the ball of the cross bar when Pogiso Sanoka curled the ball goal wards in the 4th minute. The ball spun towards Bvuma who took no chances and pushed the ball out for a corner. The Chiefs keeper did well again in the 21st minute when he stopped a driven shot from close range by Mxolisi Kunene, pushing out his left leg to stop the ball at his near post.
Martizburg United took the lead on the half hour mark. Judas Moseamedi and Daniel Cardoso chased down the ball although Cardoso got to the ball first, his attempted pass back to Bvuma was short and Moseamadi got hold of the ball. He then proceeded to go to the side of Bvuma and rolled the ball into the empty net to give Maritzburg the lead.
Three minutes on Cardoso and Moseamedi tussled for the ball on the left, the Maritzburg attacker got the better of the Chiefs defender and raced towards goal, where he unleashed a powerful shot which was blocked by Bvuma.
Chiefs best chance of the half fell to Leonardo Castro in the 39th minute, when he was found in the Maritzburg 18 -yard area with a ball from the right - he attempted to lay the ball to his left to Samir Nurković, but Rushine De Reuck intervened to make a vital clearance of what would have been a certain goal.
Two minutes before the break Yagan Sasman slid to bring the ball back into play, but the ball fell to a Maritzburg play and eventually to Kunene but for quick thinking from Bvuma who raced off his line to make block the ball a made a crucial stop. Maritzburg went into the break 1-0 ahead.
Coach Middendorp would make his first change when he brought on Dumsani Zuma for Kearyn Baccus at the start of the second half.
Chiefs went in search of the equalizer early in the second half. Eleven minutes after the restart, following some good work on the right by Bernard Parker, he found Nurković in space in the Maritzburg 18-yard area. The Chiefs striker managed to turn and hit the ball towards goal drawing out a saw from Richard Ofori in the Maritzburg goal.
As the hour mark approached, Daylon Claasen skimmed the Chiefs up right with a shot from the edge of the Chiefs 18-yard area, after being played into space. His effort got the better of Bvuma with the with the ball hitting the post on its way out.
The Amakhosi drew level in the 78th minute, after a foul on Dumsani Zuma. Lebogang Manyama floated in the resulting free kick which flew over the Maritzburg defense where Nurković met the ball powerfully with a diving header. The power of the ball meant the Ofori could only block the ball, Sasman followed up turning the rebound home to make the score 1-1.
With six minutes to go, Bvuma was able to stop Moseamedi with a save from close range, but a short while later he scored his brace after meeting a cross from the right by Bandile Shandu. He drove the ball powerfully past Bvuma to give the visitors their lead at 2-1.
Chiefs were not able to find a second equalizer and fell short of their goal of reaching the final.
What it means:
Chiefs’ eight game unbeaten run in all competitions, which has included six successive league wins and two penalty shoot-out victories in the Telkom Knockout Cup Last 16 and quarterfinals came to an end with this loss.

Fact of the game:
This was the fifth cup meeting between the sides, and it was the first time Chiefs had been beaten by Maritzburg in a cup match.

In what was tough afternoon for the Chiefs backline Yagan Sasman was strong in keeping Chiefs line at the back, he was also influential in bringing Chiefs back into the game with a crucial equalizer. The judges chose the brace scorer as their man of the match.
Bvuma had an incredible game, making important saves for the team. He could've easily been man on the match.
