Chiefs will be looking to use the game to gauge their readiness for the new season and against a team that boast international stars the likes of Rafael Van Der Vaart, Gareth Bale and Bafana Bafana midfielder Steven Pienaar the Amakhosi will be looking to put on a good showing.
Chiefs are the defending Vodacom Challenge Champions having beaten Spurs Premier League rivals in the final in 2009 and the Amakhosi will be looking to avenge two previous losses against Spurs in 2003 and 2009 when they face them on Saturday afternoon.
The English challenge
Since South Africa’s readmission into the international sporting fold in the early 1990’s Chiefs have faced six English clubs in eleven matches starting with Crystal Palace in 1992 followed by games against Manchester United, Arsenal, Spurs and most recently Manchester City.
In the Vodacom Challenge era Chiefs have played five games against three different English clubs and have won two of them in the 2006 final via penalty kicks against Manchester United and against City in the last final back in 2009.
Chiefs though are yet to defeat the visiting English team in their first game since the tournament’s structure was altered in 2006 although they did manage a 1- 1 draw with Manchester United in their opening game of the 2008 competition.
Spurs Mission
Chiefs and Spurs have a recent rivalry that goes back to 2003 when under Gelnn Hoddle the Amakhosi faced the North London Club in a South Africa 2010 bid match at Newlands Stadium in Cape Town, Spurs won the game 2-0.
Four years later the teams squared off in Durban in the opening game of the 2007 Vodacom Challenge and Spurs again emerged victors winning the game 2-1, with Shaun Bartlett scoring Chiefs goal on that occasion.
Saturday’s game represents an opportunity for the Amakhosi to re-write their rivalry with Spurs and record their first win over them.
