“We had a bad day in the office,” coach Steve Komphela admitted after Kaizer Chiefs lost the Soweto Derby 3-1. “My compliments go to Orlando Pirates.”
The Buccaneers were the better side on the day, even though it was 1-1 at halftime thanks to Erick Mathoho’s equaliser just before the break. It was Chiefs’ first loss in the 2015/2016 Absa Premiership campaign.
“Pirates played with high energy,” continued Komphela after his first official Derby since taking charge of Amakhosi. “They realised that they had to win. Not that we didn’t want to win, but we didn’t exert ourselves enough.”
“It’s never easy to lose a match, certainly not a Derby. When they got the ball, their transition forward was fast, with the intent to hit. Instead, we took it a bit slow in the transition. We have to go back to the drawing board and rectify this.”
Chiefs are now in sixth position on the league table with 14 points from nine matches. Three matches were won, nine ended in a draw, while one match was lost. The goal difference is positive at plus six (13 scored, seven conceded).
Up next for Amakhosi is Tuesday’s league encounter against Golden Arrows at home at the FNB Stadium (kick-off is at 19:30).
Arrows are at present on equal points with Chiefs, but have a game in hand. Their goal difference is less good at plus two. The team is coach by Serame Letsoaka, who, like, Komphela, played for Free State Stars in the past.
It will be an interesting game to watch and supporters are asked to come out in numbers to be behind the team.
“Serame is a scholar of the game,” Komphela looks ahead to Tuesday’s league clash. Each time we lose a match, the stakes get higher. It’s important that we respond to today’s set-back.”
