Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter and defender Tefu Mashamaite won the Absa Premiership Coach and Player of the Month award for September and October.
Mashamaite got the award as a result of having played well during these months and for being a critical component to Amakhosi’s defence. Besides that, he has played a crucial leadership role in the absence of captain Itumeleng Khune.
“I am humbled by this award,” Mashamaite reacted. “However, it’s always important to keep sight of the bigger picture. It's about perseverance. It’s about grinding and inspiring my team. On the other hand, I can’t win games on my own. Matches are won as a team.”
Mashamaite played for Bafana Bafana in the 2-2 draw against Nigeria in the last Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Wednesday, arriving with the squad back in South Africa a day later.
Meanwhile, the Amakhosi will host Mamelodi Sundowns in an Absa Premiership match at the FNB Stadium on Saturday (kick-off at 15:30).
“It's going to be a challenge but we are ready,” Mashamaite commented on tomorrow’s league clash.
Amakhosi coach Baxter also won the Absa Premiership award for August, while Mandla Masango won the Player of the Month award.
“It’s always nice to get awards,” Baxter said. “However, football is about opinions when it comes to the best coach or the best players.” Hereafter Baxter added with a smile on his face: “It is very nice to get a pat on the back.”
About the upcoming encounter against the Brazilians, Baxter mentioned that “Sundowns are a top team. Their inconsistent league form so far will have no impact come Saturday’s match. It's up to us to apply ourselves.”
