Besiktas upset Lyon in Peace Cup

Michael Essien's penalty goal in the final minutes lifted Turkish powerhouse Besiktas to a 2-1 victory over French champion Lyon, while South Korea's Seongnam Ilhwa edged South Africa's Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 Wednesday at the soccer Peace Cup.



Lyon defender Jose Gomes de Morase Edmilson conceded the penalty when he bumped Besiktas midfielder Sergen Yalcin inside the box in the 86th minute. Essien moved to the spot and calmly chipped the clincher into the upper left corner of the net.



After a scoreless first half contested in driving rain, Besiktas jumped ahead in the 47th minute when Daniel Gabriel Pancu fire off a low-flying shot from the top of the square.



Lyon equalized in the 74th when Peguy Luyindula connected on a cross with a sliding kick past Besiktas 'keeper Oscar Cordoba.



In the other Group A match, veteran striker Kim Do-hoon gave host Seongnam Ilhwa its second win of the tournament with a left-foot strike in the 18th minute and ended Kaizer Chiefs hopes of reaching the final.



With just one more group game left, Seongnam Ilhwa led its group with two wins. Lyon and Besiktas had a win and a loss apiece, while Kaizer Chiefs fell behind with two losses.



The Peace Cup opened on Tuesday, with Lyon beating Kaizer Chiefs and Ilhwa edging Besiktas. On Wednesday, Dutch champion PSV Eindhoven crushed German club 1860 Munich 4-2 and Nacional of Uruguay drew with Los Angeles Galaxy in Group B.



Galaxy and 1860 Munich were to meet Friday and Eindhoven was against Nacional.



After a round-robin, the top team in each group will advance to the championship match at the World Cup Stadium in Seoul with US$2 million on the line for the winner. The runner-up will earn US$500 000.
