The Kaizer Chiefs quartet who featured for Bafana Bafana during South Africa’s 2-0 triumph over Angola on Wednesday in Durban during their second game of the 2013 CAF Africa Cup of Nations have received glowing reviews for their performances from former Amakhosi and South Africa captain Neil Tovey.

Tovey famously skippered Bafana to their 1996 Africa Cup of Nations triumph, was left impressed by the way Chiefs players performed on Wednesday particularly those of Lehlohonolo Majoro and Reneilwe Letsholonyane who entered the fray as second half substitutes against Angola.

As Tovey said “after the first game against Cape Verde Gordon Igesund could have changed ten players only Khune really did well in that game, so for them to come back as substitutes and respond the way they did was fantastic”.

Tovey holds the view that Majoro and Letsholonyane demonstrated their professionalism by the manner in which they carried their duties after coming off the bench “we must realise that the tournament is like a league season all the players will play and I was impressed with the way Letsholonyane performed in midfield after replacing May Mahlangu who was a dominant figure in the first half.

He did all the dirty work and set up Majoro with a wonder pass demonstrating good vision, Majoro finished well showing he has the knack, character and mentality to perform at the highest level. We have seen him come off the bench to score for Chiefs and lets the coach know that he can do a job for the team.”

When Tovey captained Bafana to glory they too kept consecutive clean-sheets in their opening two games and he has also heaped praise on Itumeleng Khune’s composure in goal, “since Hans Vonk in 2002 no goalkeeper for South Africa in 2004, 2006 or 2008 managed to keep clean sheets in consecutive games and Itu has done that.

The defensive unit in front of him has been well marshaled by him, Angola had great chances and Khune made really good saves to stop them, his role in the win should not be down played.”

According to Tovey all seven of Chiefs players in the Bafana set up need to be ready to perform when called up just as Tsepo Masilela who missed the first game against the Cape Verdeans and Majoro and Letsholonyane did against Angola.

Tovey said; “the Chiefs players in the team have a major role to play in Bafana’s success, I was once dropped for a World Cup qualifier by Clive Barker in 1997 and I did not have to prove anything I just needed to show my worth to the team and the next game I was back.

The guys showed that they are worthy of being in the team with their performances on Wednesday, but those who did not play will get the chance and need to be prepared to take it when it comes.”

Bafana Bafana is next in a 19:00 kick-offaction again in Durban on Sunday when a draw against Morocco will be enough to see them through to the last 16.
