Kaizer Chiefs beat Polokwane City 3-2 in an Absa Premiership match at FNB Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The visitors went into the break 1-0 up, but Amakhosi came back strongly in the second half with Bernard Parker, Joseph Molangoane and Willard Katsande scoring the goals. The last 30 minutes were an absolute thriller with four goals being scored.

Molangoane made his debut as a starter for Chiefs since having sorted out his contractual issues with Chippa United a few weeks back.

Parker, meanwhile, made his first league start since the opening match of the 2016/2017 against Bidvest Wits back in August.

There was a relatively good crowd at the FNB Stadium on a warm Sunday afternoon with the supporters fully behind the team.

It resulted in the team being motivated to go forward, trying to put the Polokwane defence under pressure.

George Maluleka had a fine shot on goal already in the fourth minute, but the ball deflected off a defender relatively straight to the goalkeeper.

Slightly against the run of play, the visitors got a penalty when Katsande, who was back from suspension, brought down Puleng Tlolane in his own box. Referee Victor Hlungwani had no other option then to point to the spot.

Rodney Ramagalela decided to take the spot kick, obviously with the idea of slotting the ball into the back of the net. Goalkeeper Brilliant Khuzwayo, however, had other ideas and brilliantly saved the kick, diving to his left.

Somewhat disappointingly, Ramagalela could make up for his mistake by kicking the ball from just outside the box past Khuzwayo in goal in the 31st minute. It was 1-0 and the crowd went quiet.

Luckily, Chiefs quickly regained their composure and went looking for the equaliser. Captain Siphiwe Tshababala had a fine opportunity to do so in the 41th minute, but he just couldn’t get the ball past the City goalkeeper.

Another good chance came for Lewis Macha on the brink of halftime after an excellent cross from inside the box by Tshabalala. The Zambian striker, however, just couldn’t get his foot to the ball.

Macha was replaced at the start of the second half by Emanuel Letlotlo.

The home side now played better, although there was a set-back when right-back Ramahlwe Mphahlele got injured and had to be replaced by Kgotso Moleko.

More and more Chiefs started to build-up the pressure on the goal of the visitors. Several chances followed, but it was finally Parker who headed the ball excellently past the goalkeeper, 1-1. Tshabalala had provided an excellent cross from the left.

It was a welcome goal for Parker, who last found the back of the net in February against Volcan de Moroni in the CAF Champions League.

The striker had an excellent match and he was again important in the 71st minute when his cross found Molangoane, who finished neatly from close range. It was his first goal wearing the Gold and Black jersey.

The Chiefs didn’t sit back after getting in front and tried to get a third goal.

After a poor first half, the Glamour Boys had a much better second.

However, there was a set-back when the visitors managed to equalise on a counter-attacking with Tlolane slotting the ball through Khuzwayo’s legs.

And just when everybody thought that another draw loomed, Katsande snatched the winner for the Amakhosi in the dying minutes of the game with a superb shot from just outside the box.

It was in the end a deserved win for Chiefs. Parker was selected as the Man of the Match for a very good performance.

Amakhosi have now collected 21 points from 14 matches.

Chiefs now visit Golden Arrows in an Absa Premiership in Durban on Wednesday evening. The match will take at Moses Mabhida Stadium (kick-off is 18:00).
