On that fateful night with the two soccer giants, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates were squaring up and with 60 000 already crammed inside the stadium there were still thousands of fans waiting outside the gates.
Kaizer Chiefs striker, Tony Ilodigwe had given the Glamour Boys an early lead before Tso Vilakazi scored an equaliser to ensure an electrifying start to the Soweto derby.
This sparked a further surge by fans trying to get entry into the stadium, resulting in 43 fans losing their lives and hundreds getting injured. The match was abandoned by the referee and rescheduled for a later date. The disaster remains the worst sporting accident in South African football history.
The Kaizer Chiefs Board of Directors, Management, Technical Staff, Players, Staff and the entire Kaizer Chiefs Family would like to remember the 43 people who lost their lives during that incident. We send a special message of hope and comfort to all the family members and friends they left behind.
May the souls of the departed continue to Rest in Peace.
