Kaizer Chiefs and Santos played to a goalless draw in front of 18 000 supporters at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Saturday evening.

The draw against Santos was the third for the Amakhosi this season and a second consecutive draw following a draw away to Maritzburg United on the first day of the month.

The Glamour Boys were looking at closing the five point gap between themselves and leaders SuperSport United who were held to a goalless draw by Ajax Cape Town on Friday evening.

They made their intentions clear in the opening minute of the game when Siphiwe Tshabalala forced Tshepo Motsoeneng to make a save.

Tshabalala was in the thick of things again five minutes later as his well taken shot outside the 18-area-box went just wide as the Amakhosi searched for an early goal.

With Reneilwe Letsholonyane back alongside the ‘general’, Tinashe Nengomasha, Chiefs enjoyed more possession of the ball and looked threatening when attacking on the right through wingback Jimmy Tau.

Santos, looking at catching the hosts on a break, came close from scoring when Graham King’s strike went just wide and a minute later Bongi Macala forced a superb save out of Arthur Bartman as the hosts took their foot off the paddle.

The start of the second half went the same as the first half as stand in captain, Tinashe Nengomasha and Siphiwe Tshabalala shot wide and over the bar respectively inside the first ten minutes.

In the 63rd minute, Graham King watched his strike shaving the crossbar with Chiefs defence caught facing their poles.

The Serbian brought on Sthembiso Ngcobo in a place of Kaizer Motaung JNR but it was Santos who once again came close as Eleazar Rodgers watched his header going just over the bar when it looked easier to score. This was following a cross from Graham King.

Chiefs suffered a blow as injured Tinashe Nengomasha was replaced by Lucky Baloyi in the 70th minute.

Santos continued to probe and it was Rodgers again who watched his header coming off the post in the 79th minute after a cross from Jurie Basie.

Chiefs piled the pressure on the visitors in the dying minutes but that was not enough as they secured their third draw this season.

The Amakhosi will have another free weekend before taking on SuperSport United at the very same ground on Wednesday, 30 November 2011.
