A second minute goal by Bernard Parker and a sixth minute equalizer by Sifiso Vilakazi was enough to see Bidvest Wits hold Kaizer Chiefs in the Absa Premiership match at the Mombela Stadium on Saturday night.
The match kicked off ten minutes late following the late arrival of supporters into the stadium. Nevertheless, as soon as the match kicked-off there was immediate action from the away side.
Bernard Parker snuck behind the defence of Wits to sneak in a goal within the first two minutes of the game.
It was end-to-end stuff at the Mombela as Sifiso Vilakazi came running into the box to get onto the end of cross by Sbusiso Vilakazi and place it into the back of the net in the sixth minute to draw the scores level.
However, replays showed that the cross took a deflection off Vilkazi’s hand to go into the back of the net, but the goal still stood.
In the 16th minute Parker latched onto a cross to head it in, but it fell straight into the palms of the Emile Baron, as Chiefs continued to apply all the early pressure.
In the 25th minute George Lebese took a shot at goal with his weaker right foot but his effort was dealt with by Baron, while two minutes later Daylon Appolis was brought on to replace Masibusane Zongo due to injury.
On the half our mark Chiefs made a poor attempt to clear their lines which saw the ball fall for Vilakazi, who was open in the box, but he failed to get off a decent effort.
The first half ended 1-1.
The second half kicked- off and it was the home side who won the first corner of the half.
Minutes before the hour mark, Patrick Phungwayo worked some magic on the flanks to strike a cross into the box but his effort went over the heads of his teammates, while moments later Parker was blown for offside.
In the 65th minute, Stanton Fredricks replaced Miguel Timms, as the duel between Richie and Katlego Pule intensified.
Richie then created the first effort for Chiefs in the second half as he unleashed a long range effort that went high of goal.
Wits then won three consecutive corners but the Amakhosi backline did well to keep the Clever Boys out.
Mandla Masango was then replaced by Abia Nale in the 74th minute, before having Sibusiso Vilakazi blown for offside straight after.
Lucky Khune was then brought on for Parker 10 minutes from time, while Appolis’s run into the box was well closed down by a Chiefs player four minutes later.
Wits struck an 86th minute free-kick from the edge of the box but the effort hit the wall, while the Wits goal scorer was replaced by Bhongolwethu Jayiya.
Four minutes of added time was seen out by the two teams as they both finished the match on par with one a piece.
