MTN8 Quarterfinal

At Loftus Versfeld, Tshwane

Mamelodi Sundowns 1 (Sangweni 6, Langerman 12, Mokoena 25, Manqele 37)

Kaizer Chiefs 1 (Letsholonyane 76)

Kaizer Chiefs were knocked out of MTN8 following a 4-1 defeat in the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday afternoon.

Chiefs’ day in the office didn’t go according to plan. It was always difficult to come back from losing a derby game and face off with another top PSL team. The much anticipated game started with Chiefs losing concentration and allowed Sundowns to score the opener which threw Coach Stuart Baxter’s plans in disarray.

Chiefs went into the game without some players who got injured during preseason and to compound matters Siboniso Gaxa started the game carrying a knock and was substituted at the 10th minutes of the game.

Kaizer Chiefs Coach, Stuart Baxter was forced to reshuffle his side ahead of the game Jimmy Jambo with a broken nose coming in a place of Keegan Ritchie who came down with a viral infection the day before the game.

The Glamour Boys started stronger but it was Mamelodi Sundowns who scored two goals inside the first twelve minutes with first coming through Thamsanqa Sangweni getting a free header from Teko Modise’s free kick in the 6th minutes and Tebugo Langerman grabbing a second one in the 12th minute.

Things got worse for the Glamour Boys when injured Siboniso Gaxa was replaced by Lincoln Zvasiya in the in the 10th minute.

Lebohang Mokoena grabbed a third goal for the hosts in the 25th minute following a superb save from Itumeleng Khune who had saved an initial effort from Sundowns.

Wayne Sandilands was forced to make save in the 31st minute as the visitors wanted to pull one goal back.

Lehlohonolo Majoro should have done better in the 35th minute when he forced a save out of Wayne Sandilands in a one on one situation.

Sundowns increased their lead in the 38th minute when Edward Manqele scored with a free header following superb work from Teko Modise. Halftime score 4-0 to Sundowns.

Stuart Baxter introduced Sthembiso Ngcobo in the 54th minute in place of Abia Nale as the Glamour Boys looked at attacking Sundowns.

Bernard Parker’s well taken free kick just outside the 18-area-box was well saved by Wayne Sandilands as the Amakhosi continued to search for that elusive goal.

Then in the 73rd Sthembiso Ngcobo watched his header going agonisingly wide of Wayne Sandilands’s left upright following a superb cross from Bernard Parker.

Reneilwe Letsholonyane pulled a goal back for Chiefs in the 76th minute after deflecting Bernard Parker’s shot.

Chiefs were awarded a penalty in the 86th minute when Wayne Arendse was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the 18-area box but Josta Dladla’s effort hit the post.

Chiefs had a better second half but it was too late to reduce the deficit as Sundowns proceeded to the next round of the competition.

It is back to the drawing board for Stuart Baxter and his charges ahead of the Absa Premiership opener away against AmaZulu this coming weekend. Chiefs will be hoping to bounce back to winning ways.
