Referee’s optional time allowed Orlando Pirates to equalise after Kaizer Chiefs took a lead in the 10th minute of the first half. Pirates went on to win the game 5-4 on penalties in front of a record 92 702 who filled the Soccer City Complex on Saturday evening.

The game, one of the most anticipated derbies in football world drew a lot of interest from both sets of supporters as it was going to allow the two teams to parade their new signings ahead of the new campaign. Both teams didn’t disappoint when they treated the fans to a fine entertaining football.

Pirates started the stronger of the two sides with Benni McCarthy forcing a save out of goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune inside the first minute.

It was the Glamour Boys, spotting their new royal blue jersey, who opened the scoring when Abia Nale had a tap in in the 10th minute following a piece of good work from winger, George Lebese. The strike was Nale’s first strike in the Soweto derby since joining the Glamour Boys in January 2009.

The rejuvenated Nale continued to ask questions to the opposition defence and he was in the thick of things again in the 26th minute when he left defender, Lucky Lekgwathi for dead but indecisiveness with the ball allowed the opposition to recover as Oupa Manyisa cleared the danger.

In the 41st minute Stuart Baxter was forced to make his first substitution for the game when injured Lebese was replaced by Siyabonga Nkosi.

Halftime score 1-0 to Kaizer Chiefs.

In the 53nd minute Champion Coach, Wilson Mbatha and his counterpart at Pirates made substitutions with Chiefs captain, Itumeleng Khune being replaced by Arthur Bartman while Moeneeb Josephs was replaced by Senzo Meyiwa.

The substitutions were voted by the fans a unique element of the Carling Black Label Cup.

Ndumiso Mabena's tame shot in the 69th minute was easily saved by Bartman as Pirates desperately searched for an equalising goal.

The Glamour Boys continued to knock the ball around with Pirates chasing shadows to the delight of the fans that had come out to fill the calabash. There was no guessing on who was dominating the stands as Amakhosi had painted the stadium gold and black.

Stuart Baxter continued to test his option as he made a double substitution in the 76th minute with Eric Mathoho replacing Tefo Mashamaite and Nale being replaced by Keegan Ritchie who played in an advanced role on the left as compared to the usual left back position.

Pirates finally found an equaliser courtesy of Benni McCarthy’s header following good work from Siyabonga Sangweni who flicked the ball back into the box following Daine Klate’s corner.

Pirates went on to win the game via penalties after Lincoln Zvasiya’s penalty was saved by Senzo Meyiwa allowing Ndumiso Mabena to score the winning penalty.

Coach Baxter should be pleased with the preparations for the season as his charges responded positively to preseason preparations after lifting the Gauteng Cup and giving a good account of themselves in the Carling Black Label Cup.

Lucas Radebe who is an ambassador for Black Label gave Baxter’s side thumbs up despite the loss; “The Club has strengthened the team especially at the back where they have brought in good players. They have a very good coach in Stuart Baxter and I am sure they will do well this coming season.”

It is back to serious business in a week’s time as Chiefs travel to Loftus Versfeld to honour a meeting against Mamelodi Sundowns in the Top 8 quarterfinal.

At the end of the day the Glamour Boys lost the battle but the war rages on in the season that is destined to be challenging.
