Chiefs ready for friendly warfare

Posted in News on Feb 05, 2006.

A smart slick and relaxed looking Ernst Middendorp lead Chiefs off the team bus as the Amakhosi arrived at the Newlands rugby stadium in Cape Town for a friendly game against Ajax Cape Town. Chiefs continue to prepare in earnest for the resumption of the PSL in ten days time when they will face current log leaders Sundowns, coach Ernst Middendorp will be using Sunday afternoons encounter against the Urban Warriors as a yard stick to measure his fitness and preparedness ahead for when normal business resumes on the 15th.

Included in Sunday afternoon’s starting eleven are defender Siphiwe Mkhonza and midfielder Gert Schalkwyk, both of whom were given the weekend off when Chiefs defeated Bloemfontein Celtic by two goals to nil last Saturday in Port Elizabeth. Left back Ditheko Mototo also finds himself back in the starting eleven, with the opportunity to gain some much needed match practise he replaces John Shoes Moshoeu, as coach Ernst Middendorp has played around with combinations.

The change in formation has resulted in the front pairing of Kaizer Motaung Junior and David Radebe been omitted from Sunday’s starting eleven as the coach has opted for a lone striker up front, in the form of Songwe Chalwe. Ernst Middendorp has pronounced himself happy with his team’s performances over the past two weeks in warm up matches against Russian side FC Moscow and Bloemfontein Celtic and is confident of more positive outcomes from Sunday’s game in the mother city.
