Kaizer Chiefs returned where it all started in a modest house at Sentho Street in Phefeni on Tuesday as the Club continued with the Trophy Parade.
The Glamour Boys who turned 43 earlier this year were formed back in 1970 and Executive Chairman, Kaizer Motaung’s home was where what has become the biggest sporting brand in the continent was conceived.
Supporters Relations Manager, Cecil Motaung a brother to the Executive Chairman welcomed the team; “This is where it all started and I welcome you all,” said Cecil Motaung.
“Today you will have a unique opportunity to walk on the footsteps of our Chairman. This is a home that housed most our players like the late Ace Ntsoelengoe, Banks Setlhlodi and many others. This was a home for all and continues to hold a very special place in our hearts.
“This is where the history was made and the Task Team that organised this Trophy Parade needs to be commended for bringing everyone including the trophies here.
“It is important for the ancestors to know that they are not forgotten,” added a visibly emotional Motaung who was flanked by the Executive Chairman’s children, Jessica Motaung, Kemiso Motaung and Kaizer Motaung JNR.
The Glamour Boys were welcome by hundreds of supporters and school children who had taken time to come and salute their heroes.
“There was also a presence of the first born to Cyland and Sophie Motaung (Kaizer Motaung’s parents) Gladys’s who congratulated the team and wished them all the best going forward.
Club legend Doc Khumalo added; “Some of you might be surprised to hear the name, ‘BoyBoy’ this is the name our Chairman is still being known here.
“My father was also here when all this started and I was fortunate to watch a training session in the early 70s on the pitch adjacent to the house.”
Stuart Baxter was also moved by the visit to the home; “These are the roots of the Club and when you are as high as we are maybe we needed to come here to be back on our feet again. It is a humbling experience to be here.
Ward 39 Chairperson, Tumi Khoza also a supporter of the Club presented a token of appreciation in a form of a framed signed t-shirt to the team for winning the Absa Premiership and taking time to visit their roots in Phefeni.
The bus went through the streets of Soweto driving past the popular Vilakazi Street where Mandela’s house remains a main attraction and then through Chris Hani road and back to Naturena.
Meanwhile earlier on the entire team visited Absa Headquarters in Johannesburg where they were welcomed by close to 5000 employees who were visibly elated to welcome the reigning league champions.
The players had a light lunch at Absa Towers before signing autographs and conducting interviews.
Absa Premiership Manager, Stuart Masela had kind words to the team; “Welcome to the Absa Towers; over the past couple of years we have hosted both SuperSport United and Orlando Pirates here and there were always questions; when is Kaizer Chiefs coming? I kept on saying when they win the league and you can all see how happy everyone is to welcome you here.
“We strive for both excellence and integrity and that is what the Kaizer Chiefs have always been all about on the field and the manner in which they look after their supporters. The current players now will have their names engraved in the hearts of the Kaizer Chiefs faithful having won the title.
“They will be mentioned on the same breath as the likes of Ace Ntsoelengoe, KKK Mthimkhulu, Chippa Molatedi, Doctor Khumalo and others. We congratulate you,” added Masela.
Marketing Director Jessica Motaung who accepted a token from the bank on behalf of the Executive Chairman, Kaizer Motaung commented; “We are very happy to be here today and it is a privilege have so many supporters here. We are proud to be champions.
“We will continue to fly the flag and represent you with pride. I am hoping you all had great time and we will come back here again next weekend,” added Jessica Motaung.
