Clean sheet for Khune against Pharaohs

All three Chiefs players in the Bafana Bafana squad featured as South Africa defeated defending African Champions Egypt 1-0, in a 2012 CAF Africa Cup of Nations Group G qualifying game at Coca Cola Park in Johannesburg on Saturday evening.



Katlego Mphela struck the game’s only goal deep in second half stoppage time to win the points for Bafana and ultimately cement South Africa’s place at the top of Group G, taking them to seven points after three games while Egypt have just a point from their three games and remain bottom of the group.

Amakhosi goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune became the first Chiefs net minder to keep a clean sheet for Bafana Bafana against Egypt as he kept the African Champions and their star studded strike force at bay, speaking after the game a delighted Khune said.

“They had two good chances we were able to keep them from scoring, we pleased with the win it was a tough game, now we look forward to the return game in Cairo and just as the Egyptians had fans in the ground I hope we will have fans in Cairo. It is going to be a tough game in Cairo but for now we are extremely pleased with the result”.

Chiefs winger Siphiwe Tshabalala who made his international debut for South Africa against Egypt in 2006 started and finished the game for Bafana, earning his 58th cap and his 50th as a Chiefs player Shabba was handed the captain's armband when skipper Steven Pienaar was substituted in the eighty second minute of the game.

Pienaar was replaced by another of the Amakhosi players in the Bafana set-up Reneilwe Letsholonyane who earned his 21st cap. The win for South Africa is the first defeat for an Egyptian side club or national team at Coca Cola Park.



Previously Ismaily drew 0-0 in an African Cup winners Cup Quarter Final First Leg match with Chiefs at the venue in September 2001, while the Egyptian national team beat than defending World Champions Italy 1-0 during a 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup Group Game.



South Africa will face Egypt in Cairo in June.
