Kaizer Chiefs demonstrated their powers of recovery on Wednesday evening by coming from a two goal deficit to draw 2-2 against Magesi FC in a Betway Premiership encounter at the New Peter Mokaba stadium in Polokwane.
Speaking after the match, the Tunisian coach acknowledged Amakhosi’s comeback, although he stressed his disappointment at the position they were in prior to Mduduzi Shabalala’s brace restored parity and secured a point that takes Chiefs to eighth in the standings.
“It is true that we have come from two goals behind which shows an improvement in mentality and character but that was not enough because we believe we should have taken all three points,” he said, adding, “A team like Kaizer Chiefs needs to do more. We need to do better early on. When we start well we must finish our chances. I am not taking too many positives from this game because I believe we should be winning games like this.”
One shining light, though, was the appearance of a number of homegrown players from the Club’s academy, both in the starting line-up and coming off the bench, with the likes of Shabalala, Mfundo Vilakazi, Samkelo Zwane and Wandile Duba all playing their part in helping Chiefs out of a difficult situation to salvage the match.
Coach Nabi recognised their contribution, yet warned against putting too much pressure on them too soon.
“It is a very good thing for the Club to have young talent coming through our academy,” he said, “They have a lot of potential so we must give them opportunities. They will make mistakes so we must encourage them rather than criticise their mistakes. We believe this is the beginning of a very bright future for the Club and the academy.”
