Kaizer Chiefs hammered Jomo Cosmos 3-0 in what was labelled a do-or-die game for the Glamour Boys, as they were in urgent need of a victory to ensure they stay in touch with league leaders Orlando Pirates.

Chiefs dominated in their game with a renewed sense of urgency and much commitment. Defender Fabian McCarthy had won his place back in the side and had a great game proving to Ted Dumitru that he deserves to feature in the squad.

McCarthy showed superior strength and read the game well. The visitors got the game off at a flier and were out to sort their League troubles out.

Zambian international Collins Mbesuma opened the scoring in the seventh minute after he darted through the defence and hammered the ball past Cosmos goalkeeper Avril Phali.

Ten minutes later fellow countryman Songwe Chalwe - on the starting line-up for the first time since the beginning of the season - came close to doubling Chiefs’ lead, with a good shot at goal.

Nine minutes later Chalwe did double Chiefs’ lead after winger Arthur Zwane did well to run the ball to the bye line, his cross evaded the Cosmos defenders and Chalwe had an easy header into an open net.

Sibeko gave Chiefs a 3-0 lead going into the interval with a fine strike that powered past Phali who had been left exposed. It was Sibeko’s second career goal in the Chiefs colours.

Chalwe who was on fine form almost scored a brace, however his shot strolled wide of the post, Cosmos were let off a fourth goal.

Sibeko fired in another good shot from outside the 18-yard area in the 62nd minute, but it strayed marginally wide of the target. Cosmos were dealt a heavy blow in the 80th minute when Russel Mwafulirwa was sent off for a harsh tackle on Bevan Fransman, who had to leave the field.

Cosmos battled to create chances and Chiefs goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez had a relatively quiet night, with very little to do.

The win sees Chiefs stay in third position, however they reduce the gap between themselves and Pirates to ten points, and they are only a single point behind second laced Sundowns.
