“They were fighting for their dear life,” reflects fullback Tsepo Masilela on Tuesday evening’s goalless draw between Kaizer Chiefs and Jomo Cosmos, who are in a relegation battle already early in the season. “It was a good game. We had chances, but we didn’t take them.”
The Absa Premiership match was played in front of a capacity crowd at Olen Park Stadium in Potchefstroom.
“Our best was not enough,” adds Masilela, who was making a welcome return after having missed the Platinum Stars game due to suspension (after having accumulated four yellow cards). “The football ‘gods’ are not on our side at the moment. That happens. However, we will fix it and come right soon.”
Amakhosi’s left-back Masilela came close to scoring against Cosmos, with his best chance being a grass cutter that went slightly wide with goalkeeper Sherwyn Naicker well beaten.
“Yeah, I came close to scoring as I nearly did against Ajax,” states Masilela with supreme confidence. “Scoring is every player’s responsibility, because it can’t be only the responsibility of the striker. When you get a chance, you must take a shot at goal.”
Chiefs remain fifth on the log after seven matches, three points behind table toppers Platinum Stars. “The league is a marathon, unlike a cup competition,” says Masilela, who already won two league titles and two cup trophies with Amakhosi since joining the Club in 2012. “We are not in the position we would have loved to be at, but we are working hard to fix it. We know we can do better and we are better than what the league log suggests.”
“On the night Cosmos looked better,” concludes Masilela. “On the other hand, their goalkeeper was named ‘Man of the Match’, which shows that they were under siege as well.”
“We are Kaizer Chiefs. We know that every game we play is vital and teams come to us with their guns blazing.”
Chiefs travel to Mpumalanga this weekend to play against Mpumalanga Black Aces in the quarterfinals of the Telkom Knockout. “That’s a different ball game,” comments Masilela, “because cup games are different than those for the league.”
This Telkom Knockout match will be played at Nelspruit’s Mbombela Stadium (kick-off is at 18:00).
