Simply put by Kaizer Chiefs coach Vladimir Vermezovic Saturday’s MTN8 Final between the Amakhosi and their Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates, to be contested at the FNB Stadium at the Soccer City complex in Johannesburg is a match-up between the most exciting attack in the country and the strongest defence.

The Chiefs mentor like many other fans and scribes is eagerly and anticipating the attacking intuition of Chiefs with the flair of Siphiwe Tshabalala, Josta Dladla and Bernard Parker.

Coming up against the defensive discipline of Siyabonga Sangweni and others, in what will be the fourth meeting in an MTN8 final between Chiefs and Pirates as the Amakhosi look to depose their rivals Pirates who are the defending champions.

The history

Like their general rivalry Chiefs and Pirates MTN8 history through the competitions various name changes has been colourful to say the least.

The teams first clashed in the final way back in 1972 with Pirates winning that encounter and they were victorious over Chiefs in the following year’s final as well. In 1976 the last MTN8 final contested between the teams saw Chiefs exact revenge of sorts against Pirates as they emerged 5-3 victor’s in an eight goal thriller.

In the PSL era the teams have clashed twice before in this tournament Chiefs held out thanks to a lone Kenny Niemach header to defeat Pirates in the semi-finals of the 2001 tournament before going on to eventually triumph over Sundowns in the final.

Last season en-route to ending a ten season cup drought Pirates defeated Chiefs 2-1 on aggregate over two legs in the semi-finals.

In the PSL era Saturday’s clash is the third Cup final to be played between the sides with Chiefs having won both the previous clashes, which was in last season’s Telkom Knockout final and the 2005 – 2006 Absa Cup Final.

Cup pedigree.

In the PSL era Saturday’s Cup final represents the 17th Cup Final that the Amakhosi will be gracing, in this time they have won 13 and lost in three of their previous 16 championship games.

Their last lost being in the Coca Cola Cup Final in 2002 – 2003, the Amakhosi are making in total their 20th appearance in the final of this competition and have been successful in 14 of their previous MTN8 cup finals.

When it regards the PSL era this will be the 5th appearance for Chiefs in the MTN8 Final their last being in 2008 – 2009, when they defeated Sundowns on penalty kicks to lift the title.

Of their previous four visits to the final in this time Chiefs have only faced Tshwane teams in the final and this is the first time they are playing a team from outside of the capital. Also another important fact is that they have been successful in three of these finals with their one loss being in the 2004 – 2005 final to SuperSport.

In all Chiefs are appearing in a cup final for the 11th consecutive season and have won at least one Cup final in every campaign since 2003 – 2004.
