The Amakhosi legend Rudolf Gardner Seale insisted that there will never be “too much of Derbies”. Seale told kaizerchiefs.com that. “The Derby is a tradition. It never gets boring. When the two giants of Soweto meet, it is like they never met before. The Derby brings soccer alive during the week leading to and on match day.”

“This is one match that no player will afford to miss the training. In my times, we used to make excuses like family bereavement as a way to miss training. The Derby week meant there were no excuses; the training ground was full house. No player wanted to miss the Derby.

We used to go to the movies after training and at times had to disguise under our caps to avoid the fans. The Pirates fans would tease while the Amakhosi would cheer us up along every corner we passed. It was the talk of the town. Everywhere you go, you would be met by whispers of the Derby,” continued the once feared White City born defender.

“As a player, the heat begins from training. On match day, on our way to the stadium, you come to terms with the fact that the day has dawned. More so when you see the fans waving the flags along the highways and byways, you start realising the enormity of the game.

In those days there was no team walk about onto the field before the kickoff. We used to feel the fans from the dressing room. The FNB Stadium was built in such a way that you could hear the sound from the fans stamping and chanting from the stands above the dressing room. In the dressing room we sang our hearts out,” continued Gardner who scored for the Amakhosi on his debut for Chiefs against Orlando Pirates in 1989.

The Soweto Derby between the Amakhosi and Orlando Pirates is taking place this Saturday, 26 October 2013. Kickoff for the game taking place at the FNB Stadium is at 15:30. The gates open at 12:00 and there will be a DJ and Kabelo Bouga Luv Mabelane will wow the crowds. There will be activations around the stadium to entertain the early birds. Chiefs’s Supporters Club will be at Gate J & K at the stadium to buy their Amakhosi authentic merchandise and Club Membership Cards.

The fans are advised to arrive early and be in their seats by 14:00 to be part of the vibe from the onset.
