“I am happy with the result and the good performance,” reflected coach Ernst Middendorp after a dominant Kaizer Chiefs outplayed much-fancied Cape Town City in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinal. “We deserved to qualify for the semis.”
Goals from Hendrick Ekstein and Dumsani Zuma helped the Glamour Boys beat the Citizens 2-0 at Mbombela Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
“It was like a chess game,” reflected the German. “It became a matter of reading the opponent. We prepare for all the teams the same way. We really executed our game plan well.
“I therefore think that a compliment should go to everyone who was involved with the preparation and execution for this encounter. Everybody did what they were required to do.”
Goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma kept a clean sheet to continue Chiefs’ run of not conceding a goal in the Nedbank Cup this season. “Bruce returned highly confident from the Afcon qualifier with Bafana Bafana,” said Middendorp on the rising star.
Khama Billiat, meanwhile, was caught on his right leg towards the end of the game and had to be stretchered off. “I hope it’s not too bad,” the coach remarked. “We will get the full picture from our medical team. Hopefully, a bit of rest will settle the pain.”
Dax Andrianarimanana started and completed his first full minutes since becoming a Glamour Boy at the start of the season. “Dax is doing well,” complimented Middendorp on the Malagasy midfielder who had an outstanding game against City.
Immediately after the victory over the Capetonians, the draw was held for the Nedbank Cup semi-finals at the Mbombela Stadium. Chiefs will face Chippa United on the road.
“I saw them play when they beat Bidvest Wits on Saturday,” said Middendorp about the draw. “I don’t read too much into Chippa’s low position on the log – they are a good team.”
The coach was also full of praise for the Amakhosi supporters. “They came in big numbers and added to the spectacle. I’m glad we gave them the performance they deserve.”
Chiefs will next host Baroka FC in an Absa Premiership match at FNB Stadium on Saturday, April 2019 (kick-off is at 18:00).
“It’s important to now prepare for Saturday’s match against Baroka, because we want to get into a good position on the log," looked forward Middendorp to this important league fixture.
“If you check the form guide, taking into consideration the last eight league games, SuperSport United and Cape Town City are on 16 points, while we are in third position with 15 points.
“It means that we are not too far off and doing well looking at those eight games, especially when you consider that we lost matches that we shouldn’t have – they were lost due to some errors.”
Tickets for this league clash between Chiefs and Baroka are available at Computicket and Shoprite/Checkers at R40.
There is also an interesting special – supporters who buy a ticket for Saturday’s game against Baroka and, at the same time, for Amakhosi’s league fixture against Golden Arrows at FNB Stadium on Tuesday, 23 April, will get the two tickets for R60 (instead of R80).
