Khumalo has seen very little action, if any, since the beginning of the new season and this has led to questions from Amakhosi supporters about the veteran’s position in the team.
"Doctor is still a player," said Ertugral of the eve of Amakhosi’s departure to Egypt for the return leg of the Mandela Cup. "The fact that Doctor has not featured regularly in our past matches does not mean he is no longer in our plans.
"But we are using him more on the technical side as he has a wealth of experience. He is a great and positive influence on the youngsters."
Ertugral hinted that Khumalo could be given a run against Ismailia in the second leg of the Mandela Cup. Chiefs will face off against the Egyptian minus inspiration midfielder Thabo Mooki, who is out for three weeks with an ankle injury.
Mozambican offensive midfielder Jossias Macamo will also not be traveling to Cairo, as he is not eligible to play for Amakhosi. Macamo played for his former club Costa do Sol in the Confederation of African Football (Caf) Champions League.
Ertugral, whose charges were held to a lucky 2-2 draw against black Leopards in their league match on Saturday, admitted that the return leg would be difficult. However, the Amakhosi mentor remained confident that his side would go through to the semifinals.
"Only one goal will settle the matter," he said. "We have identified their weaknesses and we will use that to knock them out. They won’t be easy to open up but we have to take our chances."
