Kaizer Chiefs are in Suez, Egypt, preparing for their crucial TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup Group D clash against Zamalek SC on Saturday. Amakhosi need a solitary point from this final fixture of the group stages to progress to the knockout phase, and www.kaizerchiefs.com spoke to striker, Flavio Da Silva following their first training session since touching down in Egypt.

“It’s an important moment for us. We had a long journey here and we are fully focused on what we have to do because we want to progress to the next round,” the Guinea-Bissau international says of the upcoming match.

Da Silva has been on the scoresheet recently, particularly from the penalty spot, yet he is determined to add to his tally in service of team success.

“I want to score more to help the team,” he declares, adding, “As a striker it is my job to do that but the fact that we have quality players to set up the chances is a big help. We are getting better and I am sure more goals will come.”

The 29-year-old has also drawn praise for his hard work off the ball in pressing from the front and defending set pieces.

“Although my main task is to put the ball in the net, we still have a purpose as a team, which is to win, so I also have defensive duties and I am happy to contribute to the benefit of the team every way I can,” he says.

Amakhosi face a difficult challenge on Saturday against one of Africa’s well-known teams that boasts a long and storied legacy in continental football, although Da Silva sees nothing intimidating about them.

“They are a big team with experience at playing at this level but we are not daunted by them. We have our mission and we are only focused on getting the result we need to go through. We expect a tough game but we are ready for the fight,” he says. “It is a clash between two of the biggest clubs in Africa so the vibes around this game are like a cup final, and that’s how we are viewing it.”

The match at the Suez Canal stadium kicks off at 18:00 on Saturday, 14 February.
