The Amakhosi will kick-off the defense of their PSL title tonight against Mpumalanga Black Aces, in what will be their 18th season in the Absa Premiership. While Chiefs have generally done well in the opening games, having won 12 of their previous 17 games on the first day of a PSL season, their games on day one of a new season have not be without high drama. Kaizerchiefs.com picks out their five favourite opening day spectacles.

1. 2012-13 Amazulu 0 Kaizer Chiefs 6, August 11 2012

Chiefs set out reclaiming the glory with an emphatic win over Amazulu in Durban, striker Bernard Parker scored a quadruple of goals and became only the second Chiefs player in the PSL era to score four goals in a league game. Chiefs put the Usuthu to the sword and registered their largest away win in a league game and it was also their largest margin of victory in a PSL game, this win set the ground work for Chiefs title success last season.

2. 2004-05 Dynamos 1 Kaizer Chiefs 4, August 7 2004

Life began badly for Chiefs in 04-05 as they went behind with Dynamos taking a 7th minute lead through Sandile Ndlovu. Chiefs needed a motivator and up stepped Collins Mbesuma who tormented, teased and terrorized the Dynamos defense as he powered his way to a hat-trick as he helped get Chiefs off to the perfect start as they aimed to defend their league title. The rest as they say was history as Mbesuma would end off as the season’s top scorer - it all started against Dynamos.

3. 1999-00 Kaizer Chiefs 4 Amazulu 1, 31 July 1999

Chiefs lost out on the league title in 1998-99 by virtue of goal difference and were looking to start the new season on a high. In the off season, a young teenage prodigy Jabu Pule had caught the attention of the public with a number of mesmerizing displays. On his senior debut the 19 year old did not disappoint pulling the strings in midfield while creating and scoring a goal putting in a man of the match display as Chiefs cantered to a 4-1 triumph.

4. 2003-04 Kaizer Chiefs 2 Mamelodi Sundowns 0, August 23 2003

Still in search of their first PSL title Chiefs had the hard task of taking on three times PSL winners Mamelodi Sundowns on the opening day in 03-04, with veteran John ‘Shoes’ Moshoeu leading the attack dominated proceedings. Shoes opened the scoring in first half stoppage time, with Patrick Mayo adding a second a minute after the re-start to set Chiefs on their way to a 2-0 win. The Amakhosi would eventually lift the title at the end of the season.

5. 1996-97 Jomo Cosmos 0 Kaizer Chiefs 1

This game may have lacked goals but for its historical value it goes into the list, with the league in its infancy Chiefs had to take on Jomo Cosmos on the road in 1996-97. It was a nervy game settled by a solitary strike from the late former Chiefs attacking midfielder Thabang Lebese as the Amakhosi registered their first win in their inaugural game of the Premier Soccer League.
