“We played well tonight, but we didn’t take our chances,” Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter reacts after the 2-0 loss against Raja Casablanca.
Amakhosi lost already 1-0 at home, which means that the Club’s CAF Champions League journey has come to an end.
“Let’s be honest,” the coach continued. “Raja have a good team. Congratulations to them for the win.”
Asked a question about the singing and drumming Raja supporters, the coach enthuses: “I have coached national teams and clubs participating in the European Champions League and the African Champions League, but this I have never seen before.”
When coming back to Chiefs’ performance, Baxter comments: “It was a mental game as well, as Raja was thinking – do we go for the second goal, after the one scored in Durban, or do we defend.”
“Towards the end, we were pushing and pushing for the goal that we needed to get at least equal with Raja. That’s when they punished us on mistakes.”
“Most games are decided in transition and this game was a typical example. However, I will continue to have my players play like this, to always play positive and go forward to try creating a goal.”
“Was the game decided in those five minutes in the first leg, when Chiefs conceded a goal?,” a Moroccan journalist queried. The Amakhosi nodded, adding: “We certainly lost concentration in those first five minutes.”
“Still, my players did a good job tonight. But we failed to profit from the chances that came our way. We should have taken those and be more clinical. However, overall, I am proud of my team’s performance tonight.”
