The match will be the culmination of a three-day tour of Kwa-Zulu Natal, that will allow South African fans to meet some of biggest names in the illustrious history of the Merseyside club, with a golf day, gala dinner and autograph signings sessions providing opportunities to meet their heroes off the pitch.
Few sides have been as successful as the Liverpool club down the years, and some of the greatest names in the history of the game, both in South Africa and internationally, will appear in one of the most eagerly anticipated Legends matches Mzansi has ever seen.
The Liverpool legends side will be packed with European champions and some of the top names in the club’s history, covering the glory period from the 1960s through to the last decade.
The likes of former defender Phil Neal, who won an astonishing 22 medals during his time at Anfield, former Kop favorite and England international John Barnes, twin strike sensations, John Aldridge and Robbie Fowler as well as Durban born goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar, are just some of the top names set for South Africa next month.
“We have always enjoyed fantastic support in South Africa, where Liverpool is as loved as anywhere else in the world. It will be an honour for us to play in front of these passionate fans and show some of the skills that have not only won us many trophies, but millions of friends around the world too,” says John Barnes.
“We have a great respect for the Kaizer Chiefs club, who are South Africa’s most successful ever team and themselves are known around the world. They too have had many great players down the years and we look forward to locking horns with them.”
Kaizer Chiefs will be able to call upon some of the top names in the club’s history – playmaker Doctor Khumalo, rock at the back Lucas Radebe, midfield maestro John ‘Shoes’ Moshoeu and captain fantastic Neil Tovey.
“We have had some great players in our history and for those that never saw them play in their prime, this will be a wonderful opportunity to show the younger fans the skills that made these players such legends,” says Doctor Khumalo, Kaizer Chiefs Legend.
“We also welcome the opportunity to play a club of Liverpool’s stature, as this will be a meeting of two great sides who enjoy vast support in South Africa. We are sure it will be a great occasion not just for the fans, but the players too.”
Jared Ayres, CEO of the IPP Group, the Founding Partner of the Liverpool Legends South Africa Tour, says they are excited to see the fan response to the appearance of such great names in the club’s history.
"We saw firsthand the disappointment of the Liverpool fans when the first team tour was canceled in May and the Former Liverpool Players Association felt that South Africa was the right country to host the first major event of the Association outside of the UK," said Ayres.
"The IPP Group is pleased to be the Founding Partner of the tour, in association with 5Times, the Former Liverpool Legends Association, and we can't wait to give the fans in South Africa a glimpse of some of the stars who have made Liverpool such a great football club."
SABC Spokesperson, Mr. Kaizer Kganyago stated that it was important for the public service broadcaster to be part of this initiative of bridging the gap between the two soccer loving nations.
“As the exclusive broadcast partner of this match, we felt that it was important as the largest broadcaster in South Africa, to put our might and weight behind this game, with a world-class broadcast. The showcase between the legends of one of South Africa’s football clubs Kaizer Chiefs, and the legends of Liverpool’s football club, will be one our audiences will thoroughly enjoy” concluded Mr. Kganyago.
The world-class Moses Mabhida Stadium will play host to the match, giving the football-loving public in Durban another opportunity to see some top live action.
Aside from the match itself, the Liverpool Legends players will also be involved in a Golf Day at the Zimbali Country Club on Wednesday, November 13; will host a Gala Dinner on Thursday, November 14, as well as conduct coaching clinics and hold autograph signing sessions during their stay in Kwa-Zulu Natal.
