Kaizer Chiefs have joined the football fraternity in mourning the sudden passing of former Lamontville Golden Arrows captain Nkanyiso ‘Sgora’ Mngwengwe. ‘Sgora’, as he was affectionately known died on Monday, 18th May 2020. The former Arrows’ Skipper is described by many as an exemplary footballer who personified dedication and commitment to his craft.
Upon receiving the sad news, the Chairman Kaizer Motaung expressed his condolences to the Chairperson of Arrows Ms. Mato Madlala saying, “We may be rivals on the football pitch but at heart we are connected as humans. I wish to confirm my solidarity with you and Abafana Besthende fraternity during these tough times. As a leader in football and knowing you as the owner of Arrows, you have formed a close motherly bond with your players, and this must have come as an unbearable blow to you. Please be strong and consoled by a cataloged memory of the football legacy that the young man has left behind.”
The Chairman further relayed his sympathies to the Mngwengwe family. “I want the family of Mngwengwe and relatives to know that we are united as a football community to share this pain with them. This is with the hope that shared pain is half the pain. May they be strong under the circumstances and find comfort and solace in the Almighty. ‘Sgora’ will go down in history as someone who ran a good race and in his shortened life, left a good legacy,” he says.
Assistant Coach, Shaun Bartlett who has had a close encounter with ‘Sgora’. Bartlett served Arrows both in the capacity as assistant coach and later as head coach. He shared his memory of Sgora saying: “Sgora was a fine young lad and one of the most dedicated members of the team I have ever encountered at Arrows. In 2014 when I was coach at Arrows, we were fighting our way back to the Premiership, ‘Sgora’ played 25 out of the 30 games, in which none of those games resulted in a loss. He was a fine gentleman who will be sorely missed. I wish the Arrows fraternity and Mngwengwe family strength during this tough period.”
Once again, the Chairman would like to on behalf of the Kaizer Chiefs family, pledge his solidarity with Chairperson Ms. Madlala, the entire Abafana Besthende, Mngwengwe family, and friends. May you all receive our deepest heartfelt condolences, and may the peace of the Lord be with you.
