History was recorded today when Kaizer Chiefs took to the field – this time to chase a different shape and form of a ball, inflated oval ball, a rugby ball.

The much anticipated NBM 7’s Premier League tournament kicked off today in Outeniqua Park, George. Kaizer Chiefs fielded a Rugby 7’s team, first for a South African soccer team, in the inaugural NBM 7’s tournament which saw the likes of Breyton Paulse (Captain) and his charges crushing the Lions and the Living Ball before going down to the Sharks in the final pool match of Day 1 of the tournament.

With former Springboks Breyton Paulse, Jongi Nokwe and Frederich Lombard providing test match experience, Coach Gcobani Bobo was full of praise for his team; “Foremost we are happy to be part of this breaking ground affair. The guys were amazing today as they played according to the plan and followed the instructions. Kaizer Chiefs badge is very important and we will do our best to protect it going into the knockout stage of the tournament.”

kaizerchiefs.com caught up with Marketing Director Jessica Motaung after DAY 1 proceedings; “The day that the supporters have been waiting for finally arrived. We would like to thank our sponsor Hollard for this partnership. This has been a wonderful experience witnessing the supporters from the biggest spotting codes coming together, as Kaizer Chiefs we have always engaged with rugby, through the collaboration that we have always enjoyed with the Springboks, it has been a while now since we started to encourage our supporters via our media platforms to rally behind the Boks.”

Speaking through Kaizer Chiefs facebook page – (http://www.facebook.com/kaizerchiefs) Jessica commented: “We are proud to be involved with this great rugby tournament it’s a first in South Africa. We are only playing this weekend with an invitational side, currently we do not have a fulltime rugby team, we want to share the Amakhosi life with all South Africans and we hope we can get more South Africans loving our soccer team and sharing in our Amakhosi Dream. So please get behind the club and show your support this is good for all our Supporters . We are and will always be about sport, community and positive initiatives. Love & Peace!”
