On 11 April 2001, 43 passionate soccer fans perished at the Ellis Park stadium in Johannesburg in one of the worst tragedies in the history of South African football.
“On behalf of the Kaizer Chiefs family, we remember the passing of 43 soccer fans during the stampede at the 2001 Soweto Derby and we continue to keep the families in our thoughts and prayers. As we commemorate the 14th anniversary of the Ellis Park Stadium tragedy, we as Kaizer Chiefs, remain steadfastly committed to ensuring that something like this never happens again”, says Kaizer Motaung, Executive Chairman of Kaizer Chiefs.
The event has led to Kaizer Chiefs prioritising security measures at all our events.
Kaizer Chiefs will continue to remember those who lost their lives and pray that they continue to rest in peace.
