Keeping in touch with your favourite player – David Mathebula

Posted in News on Aug 20, 2010.

On his day, David Mathebula is one of the most technically gifted players in the Absa Premiership. He was on the brink of getting a call up during 2008/2009 season following some scintillating performances for the Club.

Last season he did not see much action…responding to fans questions “DVD” reveals he is working hard as ever to feature regularly in the team and that he has not given up on his dream to play for the national team.

How do you manage family life as a sports man?

Lolothando Zandile Ganituli

David Mathebula: I am lucky to have a wife (Mikateko) who understands the career that I have pursued as a person. I also try by all means to spend as much time as I can with my family and kids, Langutani (10) and David Jr (9 months). I also come from a family that is respectful and they have been a source of inspiration for me since I was growing up as a boy.

I am worried about the fact that you are no longer playing regularly in the team. We grew up together at home (Bungeni)…what are you doing to make sure that I see you regularly in the starting line up this season? I am also still you number one supporter…

Reagan Mabunda

David Mathebula: Reagan, thank you for your support. I remember you very well as a coach of Basketball back home and we also went to the same school. It is good to get this kind of support from people you grew up with. Thank you once again for that.

Going back to your question, I am doing my best to focus at training. I need to double my efforts if I am to play in this team. I am waiting for my turn and I know if I continue working harder and harder soon my name will be on the Teamsheet.

Which team did you grow up supporting?

Daniel Mashele

David Mathebula: I grew up supporting Orlando Pirates. At home everyone supported Pirates so that is how I also got to support the Club. I think now though they have changed loyalties and they support Chiefs. I am also a Chiefs supporter now. (Smiling).

I want to thank you for your hard work and I believe if you still do what you doing we shall celebrate you internationally many more years to come in your career. Remember God is on your side.

Floyd Hutana

David Mathebula: It is people like you Floyd who have kept me going. I thank you very much for your support. I still believe I have a lot to offer both here at Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana. I want to play for the national team and it would not be a nice thing for me to hang up my boots without wearing the Bafana Bafana jersey.

What do you think about Xenophobia and as a Kaizer Chiefs player with Love and Peace motto and what do you think the team can do about this?

PAPAS 15

David Mathebula: We are all Africans and we should all love one another! It is important that as South Africans that we treat our African brothers and sisters as our relatives because they will probably do the same when we go to their countries.

Personally I support campaigns like One Goal, aimed at developing African child education. The Club is also doing all it can to curb this…I remember one year, through the ladies team ,they donated clothing in Alexander township. Kaizer Chiefs also gave to many refugee camps when the XENOPHOBIC attacks happened

Do you believe we can win the league this season?

Humphrey Shongole

David Mathebula: Yeah! I think if we continue with the same kind of form we showed in the Charity Cup then of course we can win the league. To win the league you need a very good defensive structure and people who can score goals. I am quite happy with the squad the team has assembled this season.

It is good that a guy like Siphiwe Tshabalala will be with us, I am sure his experience will really lift the team, the same goes to the likes of Yeye (Reneilwe Letsholonyane), new signing (Sthembiso) Ngcobo. (Knowledge) Musona did well for us last season and he is also in good shape to continue where he left off last season.

Which position do you prefer to play, left wing, right wing or central midfield?

Benny Mangwane

David Mathebula: Growing up I played on the right and really enjoyed playing there. I think with my technical ability people think I can offer a lot centrally as well but I have to say that I prefer playing on the right, it is my best position.

Did the Coach tell you your weaknesses, what are those if he did?

Matjena MS

David Mathebula: No that did not happen. Judging on how we train it looks like the coach prefers players who have pace on the wings and the likes of Tinashe (Nengomasha), (Mthokozisi) Yende and JD (Josta Dladla). I know that I have to work on my pace and strength and I am working hard to improve on these.

What about media speculations that you want to leave the team for Mamelodi Sundowns?

Zanele Masilela

David Mathebula: It’s papers that said that - not me. I never ever in a single interview expressed my wish to leave the Club. I believe I have a lot to offer here and I will keep on working hard at training to convince the Technical Team. Leaving the Club has not crossed my mind!

How do you think you can overcome inconsistency?

Mzoxolo Kapa

David Mathebula: People have always spoken about my level of inconsistency but I think at times it is exaggerated. I mean games differ, for instance you can play in a high intensity game then your level of play is different.
