Shoes who turned 40 years old on Sunday (18-12-05), has been an important cog in the Amakhosi wheel since returning to South Africa in the 2001-2002 season after spending more than a decade plying his trade Turkey where he made a name for himself.
When Shoes rejoined Chiefs four seasons ago many thought that at the age of 36 he would not see many months at the Amakhosi and even less game time, he surprised all with his high work rate and fitness which saw him become a regular in the starting line up.
Shoes also ended up as the clubs top scored when the Chiefs won the league in the 2003-2004 season, after a wait of twelve years.
At the age of 38 when Chiefs won the league two seasons back he was also voted as the clubs player of the year in July 2004.
The usually quiet and private Shoes has preferred for his fortieth birthday to pass with out much fan fare and when questioned at various times over the past few years about his phenomenal form.
At an age when most of playing colleagues have hung their boots he has been known to answer “age is nothing but a number” Shoes has also been known to famously say “you are as old as you feel”.
Shoes was given the opportunity to make an address when the club held it’s end of the year function this past week where in he thanked the Chairman and all his team mates for making the last couple years of his life unforgettable ones.
Kaizer Chiefs would like to wish Shoes all the best as he enters a new decade in his life and in true Shoes fashion we are sure it will be as remarkable and memorable as the past four.
