One possible replacement Manfred Engelmann arrived on Thursday morning in the country and by the afternoon was at work putting the goal keepers through their routine.
Engelmann who has his UEFA A Coaching license is a highly experienced coach, having coached various teams in Germany; the forty two year old Engelmann was also a very successful player during his time in the lower divisions of the German Bundesliga. As Coach Ernst Middendorp will have to prove himself before his appointment will be made official “we will be taking him with us to Cape Town this weekend and will assess his work and gauge from the goalkeepers if they are happy with him. Basically he is on probation with us until the end of next week and we will than make a decision whether we will continue to work with him, he does come highly recommended and we have a good reference on him”.
Engelmann has made his intentions clear as to what he aims to achieve at Chiefs, he says “after one day I can say that the goalkeepers at Chiefs have a good grounding which will obviously make my life easier, there will be a lot of work also to be done with the junior teams so that we can help the junior goalkeepers be well prepared when they eventually get promoted to the first team”.
Engelmann’s first test will be to ensure that Chiefs maintain a clean sheet when they take on Ajax Cape Town on Sunday in a friendly game to be played at the Newlands Rugby Stadium in Cape Town. Kick off for the game is at 16h00.
