Kaizer Chiefs                (0) 1 (Manyama 88’)

Kaizer Chiefs came from a goal down to equalise late in the DStv Premiership clash with Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala Stadium to earn a 1-1 draw. The hosts had taken the lead in the 15th minute through Thabiso Kutumela who looked to be in an offside position when he was played through on goal in the build-up to his goal. Chiefs managed to find a late leveler with Lebogang Manyama heading home from close range in the 88th minute.

Chiefs were on the back foot when Happy Mashiane lost the ball way up field in the 15th minute and Maritzburg launched a counterattack which eventually saw Jose Ali Meza set free up the right wing by Daylon Claasen. Meza managed to shrug off Philani Zulu and played the ball across to Kutumela to his right, who was clearly in an offside position. That was not picked up by the officials and the Maritzburg skipper played on and side footed the ball home past a lunging Daniel Akpeyi to put Maritzburg 1-0 ahead.

Maritzburg United created another opening in the 20th minute. Bandile Shandu made a dash down the right of the Chiefs 18-yard area before turning and sending in a cross from the byline, where he found an unmarked Bongokhule Hlongwane. He was unable to find the target and headed the ball over Akpeyi and out for a goal kick.

The home side were having the better of the chances and in the 27th minute, Meza created a chance for himself running at the Chiefs defence before unleashing a well driven curling shot. Akpeyi managed to block and collected the ball at the second time of asking.

Chiefs managed to create an opening five minutes before the break. Reeve Frosler from the right sent the ball into the Maritzburg danger zone, where Willard Katsande managed to track it and headed the ball towards goal. Marcel Engelhardt stood his ground and managed to make a save.

Maritzburg led 1-0 at the break.

Chiefs made a host of substitutions at the start of the second half, and it seemed to pay dividends as Chiefs bombarded the Maritzburg goal in the opening three minutes of the second half, which saw them win a series of corners early on.

Amakhosi were looking a more attacking threat in the second half of the Nkosingiphile Ngcobo was more involved in the game and he did well to thread a ball through the Maritzburg defence in the 58th minute. Mulomowandau Mathoho was unable to reach the ball and it rolled away from him.

In the 62nd Mathoho had a chance from inside the Maritzburg 18-yard area but blazed his effort wide of goal.

In the 78th minute Maritzburg substitute Judas Moseamedi was played into space after a Chiefs attack was thwarted just past the halfway line by Claasen. He managed to beat Mathoho and Cardoso, before launching a powerful shot at goal which beat Akpeyi but came crashing off the crossbar.

Three minutes on Manyama’s volley on the turn was headed off the goal line after he connected with a throw in from the right.

With two minutes to go, Chiefs who were dominant and deserved to score an equalizer. Kearyn Baccus delivered a ball over the top from the right and it was flicked backwards by Parker and he managed to find Manyama, who was on hand to with a glancing header to get the ball home to make the score 1-1. There was a hint of offside in Manyama’s goal but like the Maritzburg goal in the first half, the match officials did not pick it up.

The game ended 1-1 with Chiefs managing to win a point with a late goal from Manyama in a game that was packed with action with both teams having had the opportunity to have won it.
