Kaizer Chiefs arrived in Luanda, the capital city of Angola on Sunday afternoon for their fourth Group C match against Petro de Luanda in the 2020/21 CAF Champions League competition.
The two teams met nine days ago in Johannesburg and Chiefs claimed the three points after scoring two goals against the Angolans, with Mulomowandau Mathoho and Happy Mashiane registering their names on the scoresheet.
Amakhosi were forced to make 8 changes to the team for the first leg against Petro de Luanda due to several injuries and Ramahlwe Mphahlele’s suspension after picking up a red card against Wydad Casablanca in Burkina Faso.
Mphahlele is back in the team after serving his one match suspension and is joined by Samir Nurković who missed the game against Petro in Johannesburg through injury.
“We have prepared adequately for the game with the players we’ve got available,” says Ramahlwe Mphahlele. “We know it’s going to be tough because they are not the same team that we faced nine days ago in Joburg. By that I mean that Champions League games are different when you play at home and away.
“We watched the game between Petro and Wydad and feel that Petro were unlucky to lose by a goal to nil because they were much stronger and missed clear cut chances. They are a strong side at home, so we have to up our game and not let any complacency creep in because we beat them at FNB Stadium.
“We are looking forward to doing our best and pocketing all the three points so we can sit on 7 points in the group. We will obviously be watching what happens in the other match as this affects us. I’m sure they will also be watching our game with keen interest.
“We have to try hard to quality for the quarterfinals because this experience will be key for the future. We have some youngsters in the team who are lucky to be playing at this level as they will be strong enough to withstand the challenges of playing in this competition in the future.”
Chiefs are in Angola for the second time this year after first visiting the country to face Primeiro de Agosto in the first round of the CAF Champions League competition where they won the match at the 11 de Novembro Stadium in Luanda. That was the first game of the year on 5 January.
The game will kick off on Tuesday at 17:00 (18:00 SA time) at 11 de Novembro Stadium in Luanda with no spectators in the stadium. A link will be posted on our social media platforms before kick-off.
