Not surprisingly the fixture involving Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs this weekend has attracted more interest from the media and fans alike more than any other MTN fixture taking place starting this Friday, 03 August 2012.

Clashes between the two sides have produced fireworks in the past and it will not be different when the two lock horns in a highly anticipated MTN8 quarterfinal encounter at Loftus Versfeld.

Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs have met 79 times in all competitions since 1985 with the Glamour Boys winning an impressive 34 while Brazilians won just 21. In cup games the Glamour Boys have a good record against Brazilians winning a total of 12 games losing just four games.

Current Assistant Coach, Donald Ace Khuse played for Mamelodi Sundowns between 1986-1988 and joined Chiefs in 1989 where he played for five seasons before going to Europe in 1993. He re-joined Kaizer Chief as a player in 1998 said clashes between the two Clubs are ‘special’ but ‘different’ to the derby.

“The games between Kaizer Chiefs and Sundowns draw lot of interest from the fans and I am not surprised with the hype around this game. The thing is Sundowns, having played for them is that they want to be mentioned among the best or biggest teams joining Chiefs and Orlando Pirates and they always lift their game as they want to break to that bracket ‘big team’.”

“Kaizer Chiefs want to continue to rule in South Africa as the biggest Club. Chiefs have always had an upper hand and statistics do not lie. This trend will again continue this weekend,” said Donald Ace Khuse regarded as one of the best midfielders to don the gold and black.

Wearing the Club’s treasured no. 12 jersey Ace was a ‘Chief Tormenter of Sundowns; “I always wanted my team to win and it always happened that I scored against them. Sundowns boosted best players in the country, Ernest Chirwali, Zane Moosa, Harris Cheou, Harold Legodi – we had the likes of Wellington Manyathi, Neil Tovey, and Doctor Khumalo who hated being dominated. They would dominate the game but we would beat them as it happened in the BP Top 8 final back in 1992 and when we beat them in the same cup (MTN8) at Kings Cup Stadium in 2008.”

On that afternoon in 1992 Ace Khuse scored late in the second half giving the Glamour Boys a 1-0 win against their rivals Sundowns; “That is the game that came to my mind as I looked at the fixture this week. I was on top of my game that afternoon so was the team. To beat Sundowns you have to play as a collective and if that happens half of the job is done. I have no doubt that we will win on Sunday and proceed to the next round,” added Khuse.

The Glamour Boys met Sundowns twice last season and managed to beat them on both occasions. Arthur Bartman was the hero as he stood between Sundowns and the victory back in December 2011 while coming from injury Reneilwe Letsholonyane gave an inspired performance after coming in as a second half substitute inspiring Chiefs to a comfortable 2-0 win at Soccer City Complex.

Full house is expected at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday when the two rivals meet and like Ace said; “The trend to beat Sundowns will continue on Sunday,”

Kick-off is at 15:00 and fans are reminded to arrive early at the stadium to avoid unnecessary delays and bottlenecks in and around the stadium.
