Nengomasha explained to kaizerchiefs.com that he has been plotting Chiefs road towards a successful defence of their title, just prior to his return to the club after a proposed transfer to a club in Qatar did not materialise for him.
As he said, “when I was heading back from France where I went on trial with the team from Qatar I took out my memo and jotted in there what I wanted to achieve in the coming season with Chiefs.
I set a target of three trophies with the MTN 8 gone while the league title and the Nedbank are still to come and ongoing, the Telkom Knockout Cup can be the first trophy on the road to achieving that treble.
We are a game away from making sure it returns to our trophy cabinet, like the rest of the team my aim is to make sure that we win the cup and ensure we defend it successfully.”
Tinashe also has fond memories of playing against Pirates in a Cup Final, as he featured when the Amakhosi last faced the Buccaneers in a Cup Final which was in the 2005 – 2006 Absa Cup Final (now Nedbank Cup).
Of that game in May 2006 which was played at the Absa Stadium in Durban he said “I remember the morning after that game I was crying as we headed to the airport in Durban, they were tears of joy and relief when I think back to that game I still cannot understand how we won.
Inside the opening twenty minutes Pirates were all over us and I thought we were going to lose with a heavy score-line, but we grouped together and managed to hold them off and eventually won the game.
I hope that we can again achieve victory over them on Saturday, we need to be positive playing Pirates in any game is never easy let alone a cup final.”
On a personal note for Tinashe winning the trophy on Saturday will see him add winners medal number five in this particular competition to his collection, he won the tournament in 2003 – 2004, 2004 – 2005, 2007- 2008 as well as last season.
While he was on the losing end during the 2002 – 2003 final, about winning his fifth Telkom Knockout Cup final he said “I prefer to think about the finals I have won not so much the one that we lost.
The thing is that those games are in the past and I am only thinking about this week’s final it will though be a fantastic achievement to win a fifth final, also I do feel that I owe it to the team to put up a performance that will be worthy of helping us successfully defend our title.”
*during the 2002 – 2002, 2003 – 2004 and 2004 – 2005 seasons the Telkom Knockout cup was known as the Coca Cola Cup.
