While Mark Fish's return to the Bafana Bafana fold was made official on Tuesday, former captain Lucas Radebe is only on standby as coach Jomo Sono named his preliminary World Cup squad in Sandton.
Shaun Bartlett, an integral member of the squad and the likely captain if he is fit, has been included but remains doubtful, with an ankle injury, to make the trip to the finals being held in Japan and South Korea from May 31 to June 30.
The squad will assemble for a training camp on Monday, May 6, in
Durban where they are scheduled to meet Madagascar in a friendly
international on Sunday, May 12.
Bafana will then head to Hong Kong on May 17 for a Four-Nations
tournament against the hosts, Turkey and Scotland.
The tournament ends on May 24 and Sono will announce the final
list of 23 Bafana players on May 22, the deadline set by Fifa.
Radebe, who last played for South Africa 15 months ago because
of a knee injury, has been placed on standbye until granted medical
clearance by his club on Friday.
Radebe's injury has relegated the former Leeds captain to the
Reserve League and his knee requires six hours' rest after each
game.
Two suprises in the squad were the exclusion of Kaizer Chiefs
goalkeeper Brian Baloyi and the comeback of former Manning Rangers
striker George Komentarakis, who now plies his trade in the Swiss
League.
Fish's return comes after a lenghty spat with the SA Football
Association that has kept him out of action for Bafana.
