Fernandez last played for Amakhosi in the 1-0 Coca-Cola Cup first round win over Santos in Cape Town on October 4. He was rested for the match against Jomo Cosmos as "he worked on some areas of his game".
The injury sustained in the accident ruled him out for the league encounter against SuperSport United last Wednesday and Manning Rangers this weekend. According to the Amakhosi medical team Fernandez sustained a whiplash. He will start training this week as the team prepares for their Coca-Cola Cup semifinal clash against Wits University on November 22.
"I was on my way to training and traffic got congested to a point of stand still. A truck failed to stop and hit my car at the back as well as couple of other cars," said Fernandez. "I was not seriously injured but my car is written off."
Fernandez said he was disappointed to miss out on selection for the three games. "I was out of training for a couple of days but came back on Friday although I didn't do any training. I guess it’s just a case of getting back into the team," he said.
The former national under-23 keeper will have sufficient time to recover and regain match fitness as Amakhosi will only be in action on November 22 as they have four players on national duty. Speaking about the clash against his former club Wits, Fernandez said he was looking forward to that. "It's a huge game and I just hope that we can finally break their defence as they haven’t conceded a goal yet," he said.
Meanwhile, defender Peter Matshitse will be out of action for up to six weeks after breaking his toe in the game against SuperSport. It was Matshitse's second game following yet another injury in the game against Black Leopards on September 9.
Midfielder Stanton Fredericks is still out of action with a groin injury. He is expected back in action in two weeks. Nhlanhla Kubeka looks unlikely to see any action this season due to endless injuries. The Amakhosi Youth Academy graduate broke his toe at training and will only start jogging this week.
Kaizer Motaung Jr - who is yet to make an appearance for Amakhosi after joining them from Bundesliga side TSV 1860 Munich - is also out with a back injury sustained at training. He is expected back at training early next week.
