Ten years to the day when he toiled hard against the senior German national team with Bafana Bafana on the 15th December 1995, Shoes Moshoeu was on hand to help the Amakhosi to a commendable 1-1 draw against a German selection team on Thursday afternoon (15-12-05).

The German team made up of players from the Mittelrhein region of Germany, won the inter regional German Championship contested between the 23 regions that make up the German Football Federation back in July this year.

Are in the country as the German soccer season goes in to a two months winter recess, played Chiefs in what was the first of two tour matches in South Africa.

If Chiefs thought the Germans would be out for a stroll in the sun on Thursday afternoon they were in for a shock, as the visitors came out guns blazing and did most of the early running and created more scoring opportunities.

The Germans took the lead halfway through the second half when FC Köln midfield Christian Schlosser beat Rowen Fernandez with a spectacular volley from the edge of the 18 yard area to give the visitors the lead.

The Amakhosi regained their composure after going behind and began taking control of the game with Scara Ngobese and Gert Schalkwyk pulling the strings in midfield.

As the game wore on the visitors began to tire as the heat and the altitude began to have an effect on them, Chiefs took advantage of this as Shoes Moshoeu struck from some way out to restore parity.

Chiefs had countless opportunities to kill off the game with half a dozen chances spurned by Scara Ngobese, one last chance falling in injury time to the midfielder with goal gaping he shot wide.

At a post match function attended by both sets of players, representatives from the German Football Federation and the German Embassy.

Kaizer Chiefs marketing manager Jessica Motaung thanked the embassy for affording the Amakhosi this opportunity and was ensured by the Germans that this will hopefully be the start of what will be many more games between Chiefs and teams from Germany.

The Mittelrhein team which is made up mainly of players who hail from German Bundesliga team’s such as Bayer Leverkusen and FC Köln, and a handful of players from the lower divisions.

With the Bundesliga in recess many of the German teams head for sunnier climates to ensure that players keep up their high levels of fitness, the Mittelrhein team who have been based for the past week at the high performance centre in Pretoria.

Will now make their way to Cape Town where they will play against a University of Cape Town team before heading back home.
