Shongwe's appointment comes shortly after yet another valuable signing in the Amakhosi camp with the signing of former Ajax Cape Town utility player David Kannemeyer on Monday.
Cool Cat, who has been working as a match commentator on SuperSport started working with Amakhosi two weeks ago and head coach Muhsin Ertugral is upbeat about this latest acquisition.
"He has been with us for a couple of weeks now and I am looking at how best we can utilise his skills," said Ertugral. "Goalkeepers are special individuals who need special attention and think William will serve that role well."
Coach Ertugral said Shongwe would be sent to Europe to sharpen his goalkeeper training skills and Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen has been identified as a possible club where Cool Cat would hone his skills.
Meanwhile, Donald "Ace" Khuse who has been working full time with the goalkeepers will assume a new role. "Ace was an important player in his days and we have to use his skills fruitfully," said Ertugral. "He will now be working closely with me in the technical team with other members of my staff."
The coach remained positive about the derby against Orlando Pirates on Saturday. "All derbies are different and we have to prepare differently.
"We lost two games we could have easily won but that was an indication that players are tired but after two days of rest they all appear in good shape," said Ertugral.
