A host of well-known sport's personalities will be present to cheer the children on and to show them a few tricks of their own, including Kaizer Chiefs FC members, Liberty Nike athletes, Paralympic, Netball stars, former running champ - Zithulele Sinqe and ex-boxing champ - Baby Jake Matlala. Arthur Mafokate of 999 records will provide entertainment.
The event gives children from the Gauteng region an opportunity to participate in a wide range of sports and to meet their South African sport's heroes. By participating in sports, children discover their skill potential and availability of opportunities through playing sports.
This year sees children from the Gauteng Alliance for Streetchildren who previously played on their own, challenge the school teams from Orange Farm. The challenge with the schools is so that they can measure their talents against kids who live with their families. The two age groups taking part will be U/14 and U/20 and the sporting codes include soccer, cricket, netball, athletics and indigenous games. The event is scheduled to start from 09h00 break at 12h30 during which time they will be interacting with their idols, and finish at 16h00. Trophies will be presented to the winning teams at the end of event and goodie bags will be supplied to all kids.
Wellnessday started in 1998 and is currently hosted by the Nike Cares Trust in conjunction with the Gauteng Alliance for Streetchildren, the Department of Sport and Recreation, the Department of Social and Welfare Services and the Joburg Metro Council Region 11.
