Mamelodi Sundowns claimed a fortuitous 1-1 draw against an impressive Kaizer Chiefs outfit in the biggest clash of the nascent 2026/27 Betway Premiership season at FNB stadium on Saturday.

Langelihle Phili, who had been a threat all game, put Chiefs into a deserved lead just past the hour mark before Cassius Mailula equalised for the Brazilians with 15 minutes remaining. Despite a gallant effort late on, Chiefs were unable to find a winning goal to put a seal on a fine performance.

In a fiercely contested first half both sides essentially cancelled each other out, with the overwhelming majority of the play condensed into the middle third of the park. No player on either side was prepared to ‘give an inch’ as committed tackles flew in from both sides, leading to a pair of yellow cards apiece.

Chiefs’ midfield trio of Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Siphesihle Ndlovu and Lebohang Maboe more than held their own in the ‘combat zone’ of a midfield, denying any space to their opponents. Likewise, Amakhosi’s more creative talents, the most prominent of which was Phili, found time and space restricted and when attempts were made to move the ball forward, the defences, both playing high lines, continually caught enthusiastic forwards offside.

It took 40 minutes for the first effort on target to arrive. Following a free kick from Maboe, Inacio Miguel stole a yard on his marker but couldn’t generate enough power in his header to beat Ronwen Williams.

A minute later, Thabo Moloisane, making his debut for Chiefs, made an excellent and timey interception of a dangerous Khulisa Mudau cross from the right, but that was as much the total of the action in a tense, though goalless opening 45 minutes.

The home side came out with a more positive approach after the restart and came close t opening the scoring in the 56^th minute when Maboe’s ball over the top found Thabiso Monyane in space and only quick thinking by Williams, who came off his line to block, prevented the fullback from finding the net.

Amakhosi continued to press forward and were rewarded in the 62^nd minute when Ndlovu picked up a loose clearance and proceeded to waltz majestically through three tackles on the edge of the Sundowns box before slipping a sublime pass into space for Phili to ram home.

Sundowns appeared bereft of a response and it looked for all money that Chiefs were more likely to extend their lead when, in the 75^th minute, an innocuous, hopeful cross was headed back into the danger zone by Grant Kekana and Mailula beat Petersen to the ball to head in the equaliser barely a minute after coming on as a substitute.

Chiefs weren’t satisfied with a draw and went for the victory. However, they were not able to break the visitors, who appeared pleased to hold onto a point, and were relieved to hear the final whistle which confirmed the achievement.

Despite dropping their first points of the season, Amakhosi maintain their place at the top of the standings, with seven points from three matches, with their next assignment a home fixture against Richards Bay on 26 August.
