When Patrick Mayo was a rookie with Bush Bucks some ten years ago in the top flight of South African football he always had a knack of giving The Amakhosi a tough time and on many occasions got the better of the Chiefs defence.

This free scoring record against Chiefs continued when he went to SuperSport United from Bucks, as he remained a Chiefs tormentor. In 2003 he joined Chiefs and having initially been brought in for his striking prowess he eventually went back to his original position which he had played in before being converted by Trott Moloto into a striker - that was playing as a central defender or on occasion at right back and very seldom at left back.

Having sat out for much of the first half of this season Patrick has found his footing and has hit the right notes for the Amakhosi as the season heads for a photo finish. He has also found form as Chiefs aim to dethrone his former club and current ABSA Cup holders SuperSport United. Having built up a Cup pedigree for themselves over the past few years SuperSport have earned the respect of their peers in Cup competitions.

With this in mind Mayo believes that SuperSport are up for the taking. He adds, “I do not mean to be disrespectful in any way, but I do feel that at the moment Super Sport are not the Super Sport I know - also if ever we were in a great position to get victory over them - it would be now”.

Chiefs do not have a particularly good record against Super Sport in Cup competitions Patrick believes that those statistics should not have a bearing on the outcome of Saturday’s game. “History is ready to be re written at the moment we are playing great football and are in the hunt for trophies given the fact that we have not won the ABSA Cup we have extra motivation to do well”.

As a player, with the so-called smaller teams, Mayo always produced his best football against Chiefs. Asked whether Chiefs need to be wary of a United back lash Mayo commented, “ It is a fact that teams always try to perform better against us. Right now we are confident that we can achieve a lot.

We also know what Super Sport will throw at us and recently they have had some poor results - although they beat Silver Stars a few weeks ago, they have struggled against the teams that are better organized. The key for us is to get the game over with early on and make our opposition work very hard for the entire 90 minutes”.

Mayo has the opportunity to put one over his old team this Saturday when Chiefs will face SuperSport United in an ABSA last 32 encounter at the FNB Stadium. Kick Off for the game is at 15h10.
