Kaizer Chiefs captain Cyril Nzama might have walked away with a solitary award at the Kaizer Chiefs annual players awards held in the Vodadome at Vodaworld in Midrand outside Johannesburg on Monday evening.

For Nzama winning the 'Players' Player of the Year' award meant more to him than any of the other prizes he was nominated for including the coveted 'Player of the Year' prize, which carried with it a cash prize of R75 000 courtesy of Vodacom and a brand new Nissan X Trail.

Instead the Amakhosi captain has said that he is content with the fact that as captain, the rest of his charges thought that he lead by example. Nzama added, "one really feels good when you know that the guys who work with you day in and night out appreciate you. Winning this award is definitely good for my motivation and my morale because it helps to know that they (players) like my leadership style and also that the players favour me as a person."

Nzama who assumed the mantle of Captain in November last year after Chiefs had a lean spell in the opening period of the league, has also mentioned that he was scared at first to be shouldered with the captaincy. As the games went on the dedication and support of all the players made captaining the best supported team in the country easy, Nzama adds, “when the coach first broke the news to me I was worried a bit but having such a tight knit group of players and a bunch of guys dedicated to the teams success made being captain easy and enjoyable”.

The Chiefs captain also thanked the clubs supporters for their unwavering commitment and continued support of the team through trying times as well as the personal messages of support he received throughout the season and particularly in the week leading up to the ABSA Cup Final.

"The supporters were 100% behind my appointment as captain and their kind words and actions helped instill confidence in the players as to my abilities as a leader and this award is for the supporters and the team who stood by me," added Nzama.

With his first season as captain under his belt Nzama is looking forward to the next campaign and he is confident that with the right additions to bolster the team Chiefs will be unstoppable in 2006-2007.

"Kaizer Chiefs had some tough times this past season and we came through them. Looking ahead, I feel that with some strengthening in certain key areas, a clean sweep next season in all the major trophies is very likely,” he concluded.
