Stuart Baxter believes that ‘fatigue’ and ‘nerves’ were behind the reason why both teams did not do well in Saturday’s Soweto Derby which pitted the two giants of South African football, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

Goalkeeper , Senzo Meyiwa was voted ‘Man of the Match’ as he stood between Kaizer Chiefs and victory on Saturday afternoon where the Amakhosi faithful had once more came out in numbers flying the gold and black flags.

“We created a couple of chances where we forced their keeper to make good saves. The game though did not live up to the expectations. I felt on many occasions we gave the ball away. Our passing game was not good at all.

Both teams came here to fight for three points, they got one point and I do not believe we both can be delighted.

“The game enjoyed a massive audience but I suspect that fatigue and nerves contributed to the players not rising to the occasion on Saturday. We will continue to work on our own game and continue to improve.”

However the Briton believed that the goalless draw that left them on top of the Absa Premiership is a “little step towards the right direction but if we are to be counted at the end of the season we need to step up a bit. There is a long way to go. The suggestions that this game was going to be a decider were premature.

"The players will continue to take each game as it comes. We will not have any more home games at FNB Stadium this season, we hope to go out and pick up points on the road (Peter Mokaba in Polokwane represents Chiefs’ alternative home ground)."
