With the talks having started in the train stations, taxi ranks, streets and in every corner of the country the moment that the fans have been waiting for has finally arrived. The Soweto Derby on Saturday promises to be a humdinger as both teams are currently neck on neck in the Absa Premiership standings.
“We have themed the upcoming Soweto Derby as ‘Moment of Glory’,” commented a visibly fired up Jessica Motaung.
“The Derby Theme is in line with our theme for the season, ‘Reclaiming The Glory’ that has been welcomed by the multitudes of our supporters. This is a moment each and every Khosi has been waiting for to put one against our Soweto neighbours, Orlando Pirates. This moment represents us with an opportunity to show who the real Bosso is in Soweto.
“Preparations for this game as a flagship of the league started way back and it is all systems go. The Marketing Team together with PR and Communication Teams have packaged the game to make sure that the game leaves the lasting impression to the thousands of fans who will be at the stadium, millions who will be watching on television and listening on radio. It is going to be a Soweto derby with a different touch,” said Jessica Motaung.
It was in the Soweto Derby that the many legends were launched and the likes of the Executive Chairman, Kaizer Motaung himself, the late Patrick Ace Ntsoelengoe, Teenage ‘Botsotso’ Dladla, the current assistant coach Doctor ‘16V’ Khumalo and many other stars in the history of South African football made their names.
Corporate Communications Manager, Vina Maphosa said, “If the history of the game is going to be documented there will be a huge chapter in the history of the Soweto derby. Statistics indicate that as Chiefs we have a supreme record over Orlando Pirates but statistics in this game are thrown out of the window. This is a moment for us to consolidate our position on top of the Absa Premiership.
“This is a moment for the current crop of players to write their names in the history books of South African football. The team will not be approaching this game differently from the game against Chippa United and Bidvest Wits before is worth three points. The team is going to approach the game with the mentality to win. We will give Orlando Pirates the respect they deserve but this is our moment, Moment of Glory,” added Maphosa with supreme confidence.
The tickets for the game are sold out as Jessica Motaung confirmed; “Through our branch networks in the country and outside we have mobilized the fans to fill the stadium and come 15h00 the stadium will be painted gold and black. We would like to call on our fans to wear our home jerseys and bring their vuvuzelas. We would also like to encourage the fans to bring their gold flags and create a memorable atmosphere.
We call on our fans to continue supporting the team. We believe that we have the best fans in the country and once more on Saturday our fans will be in full song to inspire the team. Entertainment will be galore and in conjunction with our main sponsors, Vodacom, the lucky fans will not leave the stadium empty handed.
The Roadshow:
The Club will hold a Roadshow at its premises at The Kaizer Chiefs Village in Naturena on Friday, 08 March 2013. The fans are invited to the Kaizer Chiefs Store to buy the Club’s merchandise, also to register and renew their membership cards.
Of the 147 derbies played between the two sides, Kaizer Chiefs has won 64 times while Orlando Pirates have won it 35 times with 43 including the last derby in December ending in draws since 1970.
