Kaizer Chiefs beat the University of Pretoria 1 – 0 last night to extend their unbeaten run in the league, at home, in the 2013/14 PSL season. After the game, Coach Stuart Baxter expressed mixed reactions to the narrow win.

“It was always going to be a challenge to hit the ground running after the ten days of mourning after the passing on of the Icon Nelson Mandela. In the first half we hit the ground running and played some excellent football. We got an early goal and got the game where we really wanted it. We wanted TUKS to come out and play. We knew we had to control the game because TUKS are a competitive and well organised side.

It was very important to get an early goal. We were composed in the first half. The message in the dressing room was very clear at halftime. Don’t get carried away and overplay. That was the message. We saw them when they started to play, pushing the ball forward quickly and becoming dangerous on transition. That’s all what we corrected at halftime,” commented Baxter.

Chiefs went into the break leading 1 – 0 through a well-placed shot from Knowledge Musona. It was Musona’s 3rd league goal this season.

“In the second half we didn’t pitch. We complicated matters for ourselves. We allowed them to come at us. I am disappointed with our second half performance but pleased with the three points. As I said previously we would like to hang around with the top sides on the log. We are in a decent position at the moment and that should auger well for our prospects going forward,” concluded Baxter.

The game saw Philani Cele making his debut in an official league game. Promoted from the Kaizer Chiefs Development, the 22 year old KZN born midfielder showed composure and some nifty touches to announce his arrival in top flight football.

The win meant that Chiefs had racked up four consecutive league wins in the league. Their next opponents will be Golden Arrows (Thursday, 19th December at 19:00) and AmaZulu (Sunday, 22nd December at 15:00). Both games are taking place at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
