“We know the quality of the Kaizer Chiefs players,” says German top side 1899 Hoffenheim’s sport director Alexander Rosen ahead of Friday evening’s clash against the Amakhosi. “They are also tactically very good.” The friendly match will be played at Soweto’s FNB Stadium (kick-off at 19:30).
Hoffenheim are at present in seventh position at the German Bundesliga log, just two points away from a possible Uefa Champions League qualification, the biggest competition on the European continent. With Chiefs soon to start their CAF (African) Champions League campaign the Hoffenheim encounter will be an excellent test.
The German team is known for their positive play, always looking forward to score a goal. They have some exciting players with several internationals. For example, striker Kevin Volland and Sebastian Rudy played recently for the German world champions, while the young creative midfielder Roberto Firmino made his debut for the Brazilian national team. Meanwhile, another striker, the lanky Adam Szalai, has represented his country Hungary.
Hoffenheim are having their mid-season camp in South Africa. “Everything is world class,” Rosen reacts, “from the accommodation to the training facilities.”
This is Hoffenheim’s seventh season in the German Bundesliga. Two seasons ago, the club nearly got relegated, but since the arrival of sport director Rosen and coach Markus Gisdol in April 2013, they are on the rise. Last season, Hoffenheim finished in ninth position.
Sport director Rosen promises that “all our top players will play against Chiefs. We are looking forward to play at the stadium which hosted the 2010 World Cup final.”
It promises to be an absorbing match with both teams playing attacking soccer and looking for a win. “There are no friendlies,” comments Rosen. “This will be a real game and we are looking for a win.”
Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter will, of course, be looking for the same positive outcome.
Match tickets are available from Computicket and Shoprite/Checkers outlets nationwide. The cost per ticket is R40 for adults and R10 for children. Parking tickets are available for R20.
