On this warm evening back in November, Amakhosi succumbed to their first league defeat of the season at the hands of Silver Stars. The game played at Rustenburg’s Olympia Park Stadium saw Chiefs twice take the lead but eventually succumbed playing ten men against eleven as Fabian McCarthy received his marching orders.
McCarthy, who had just returned to the Chiefs starting eleven after having missed the previous game through suspension, was sent off after pulling down an opponent.
From the resultant free kick, Stars equalized and Chiefs had to contest the rest of the game with ten men. McCarthy does not hide from the fact that he is looking to set the record books straight and ensure that Chiefs end the season with a victory over Stars.
"When we played them earlier in the season we lost, and I, at that time did apologize for getting sent off. At the moment I am working hard so that we can have a good game on Sunday and wipe out the November result," said McCarthy.
Fabian does not have any kind of animosity towards Stars and harbours no thoughts of a revenge attack, but does feel that a good showing over Stars on Sunday will be just what the Doctor ordered for next week’s ABSA Cup semi final clash against Mamelodi Sundowns.
He added; “Stars have played a good high standard of soccer all season long and playing them on Sunday will be a good dress rehearsal for Sundowns the following week. They are currently in fifth spot and play a similar style to Sundowns, so we will be using this game to keep ourselves ready for Sundowns and a good victory of Stars will keep our confidence up for the semi finals."
Chiefs travel to Rustenburg on Sunday where Fabian McCarthy will be out for redemption, as well as a good showing ahead of Chiefs important ABSA Cup semifinal clash against Mamelodi Sundowns. Chiefs have the advantage of playing this game at the same stadium (Bafokeng Sports Palace) in Rustenburg where they will meet Sundowns on the 29th April and will use the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the pitch and surroundings.
Kick off for this Sunday’s game when Amakhosi take on Stars is at 15h15.
